Experience a wondrous combination of food and film festivals, rally driving and Halloween festivities along Spain’s Golden Coast
Summer may be drawing to a close, but that doesn’t mean the end for your Mediterranean holiday dreams. The mild autumn climate in Costa Daurada, which ranges between 15ºC and 25ºC, is the perfect time to visit – this balmy climate allows you to enjoy many hours in the glorious sun, as well as refreshing and pleasant evenings on the coast. The intense heat of summer is over and, as the new season arrives, it brings the promise of more time to spend exploring and enjoying Costa Daurada in the most relaxing way.
Located on the Mediterranean coast, between Barcelona and Valencia in southern Catalonia, Costa Daurada, meaning ‘Golden Coast’ is known for its beautiful beaches, nature, great climate, fantastic gastronomy, adventure and sport activities, culture and as a perfect destination for holidays with the whole family.
Autumn is the perfect time to travel to the region and enjoy all it has on offer from activities that include flyboarding, hiking, cycling, parasailing and guided horse riding, to visiting the cultural sites of the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet, the ancient cave paintings in the Prades mountains and the Tarragona amphitheatre, but most excitingly the series of events including the popular Playmobil Festival (9-17 October), the RallyRACC Catalonia (13-16 October), the FICVI Festival (16-24 October) and Halloween festivities at PortAventura World (18 September – 14 November). Cambrils Food & Wine Fair – Entrada al País del Vi (8-12 October)
Cambrils is considered the Gastronomic Capital of Costa Daurada, the sea and land have always been generous with Cambrils, providing products of the highest quality, which more than 150 restaurants in the region endorse. This autumn Cambrils will host the five-day Entrada al País del Vi, a fair which will showcase the food and wine delicacies from the Costa Daurada region with live cooking, wine pairings and educational gastronomic activities in a relaxed and festive atmosphere. In addition to the Cambrils Food & Wine Fair, a variety of other gastronomic events will take place in Cambrils including; a virgin olive oil fair called Jornades de l’Oli Nou d’Oliva Verge Extra, from 29 October – 7 November; Jornades dels Fideus Rossos, a gastronomic festival taking place from 5 – 21 November; and the Ruta de la Tapa (Tapas Route) from 3-19 December, which is a great way to taste the most delicious tapas in town. The Nautic Club of Cambrils also plan to host the Squid Contest on 27 November, a hugely popular, traditional annual contest in Costa Daurada. More information can be found here.
Salou: Gastronomic Days of the Squid & Tasta Salou
The history of Salou is steeped in fishing tradition. In the second half of November, Salou will host the Del Mar a la Taula (Gastronomic Days of the Squid). November is the known as the best time to eat squid, and Salou is the perfect place to enjoy them. Moreover, Salou will also host Tasta Salou, which is a series of food tastings with wine or cava Torelló running from the end of September to Christmas every Thursday. Clickania, Playmobil Festival (9-17 October)
Revisit your childhood at the Playmobil Festival, one of the most popular and unique festivals in Costa Daurada, located in the old church of San Francisco in Montblanc, Tarragona. The festival is aimed at enthusiasts and collectors of Playmobil, whilst still being a great family activity for both children and adults. There are themed dioramas including medieval, pirates, circus, Egyptians, and there is a space for playing Playmobil computer games and competitions. For more information see here.
RallyRACC (14-17 October)
The World Rally Championships, one of the most prestigious events in the automotive calendar takes a hard right to the Costa Daurada in October for its 56th year. Races start daily from Salou or PortAventura World and Spectators can watch the action from various points along the routes, free of charge. There will be other renowned sports events in Salou such as the Salou Challenge (1-3 October) and the 1st Catalan Aqua Beach Trail Championship, which will take place the 9th of October.
The FICVI Festival (16-24 October)
The FICVI Festival (Vila-seca International Short Film Festival) will take place in Vila-seca. It aims to spread and promote cinematography, whilst also supporting local filmmakers. The festival lasts for nine days and is completely based around film and cinema, showcasing great movies and stories in short film format. Halloween at PortAventura World (18 September – 14 November)
Between September and November, PortAventura World is filled with haunted souls and frightening festivities that will captivate the whole family. t’s the Salou-based theme park’s spookiest time of the year and families will be able to meet the master pumpkin sculpture, the Halloween family, the greedy Sheriff and a whole host of other humorous characters. One of the highlights of the celebrations is the amazing light show on the park’s lake and the annual terrifying parade. Younger visitors will be enchanted by SésamoAventura, where Elmo, Cookie Monster, Bert, Ernie and other beloved Sesame Street characters sing songs in Halloween costumes. For a large dose of culture and heritage, autumn is the perfect time to visit Costa Daurada’s UNESCO World Heritage monuments, including the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet, the Tarragona amphitheatre and the 4000-year-old cave paintings in the Prades mountains.
